PAINTING & DRAWING

Students at every skill level enjoy painting and drawing classes at the Center. Whether it’s their first time, or they are a professional artist, students return each semester to keep perfecting their craft. The Center has multi-week classes and one or two day workshops, available in-person and online. Classes span a variety of techniques including oil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, and colored pencil.

Students will learn how to paint a wide range of cloud types—from fluffy cumulus to glowing sunsets, surreal skies, and atmospheric dreamscapes—using layered techniques that give their work a soft, luminous quality.

We will enter in the shallow end and slowly wade to the deep end of this art form without a lifeguard on duty! Description: Learning to draw the head from life is a fundamental class where we explore the proportions of the head and capture a basic value scale. This class serves as a foundational skill for creating realistic or abstract portraits. We will work on enhancing your observational abilities, improving eye-hand coordination, and discovering the proportions of the head in 3D as they relate to 2D paper. We will identify what is essential to draw first, what comes second, and what details to add later in the process. We will also touch on understanding how to incorporate a simple value scale and how facial planes contribute to depth. It's important to remind ourselves to be patient and recognize that regular practice is key, as visible progress can often be slow and imperfect, but it is constantly evolving.

The following will be addressed: what tools to use and how to use them, how and where to start, how to properly sight and measure, how to check proportion, value (light and dark), and more. Allow yourself to be a beginner, there is a joy in the process itself. Drawing from life is like meditation, where a journey of discovery is the most enjoyable part. All abilities are welcome. Leave perfection at the door!
 
Materials: Most materials are provided: newsprint and basic drawing materials. Instructor will go over the materials on the first day. If you would like to get your own materials, these are recommended: Newsprint 18"x24” for gestures, Strathmore Drawing Paper 18"x24” for long poses. Compressed Charcoal, Pink Eraser, Blending Stump, Chamois, Charcoal Pencils, and Pencil Eraser. Students should expect to spend $50+ on their materials.

There will be an individual approach to each student’s abilities and needs. The emphasis will be on acquiring skills in realistic painting. Students will learn the basics of color theory and color mixing, as well as how to use perspective, proportion, value, scale, etc. in making visually appealing compositions. -Pink warm toned paints such as apple barrel paradise pink or similar-exact color can be purchased online on Amazon, similar shades available at Michael's

-Titanium White acrylic paints-can be found locally at Walmart or Michael's

-Craftsmart purple acrylic paint-can be found locally at Walmart or Michael's

-Paint palette/wells-can be found locally at Dollar stores, Walmart or Michael's or you can repurpose a large old plastic lid etc

-Small canvas of your choice-can be found locally at Dollar stores, Walmart or Michael's

Description: This 8 week class is open to all levels and styles. The instructor will introduce the materials, talk about the basic color mixing, and the use of brushes, q-tips, palette knife, spray bottle, quantity of paint to use, and adding medium to paint. The following techniques will be addressed: drawing methods in achieving symmetry and perspective, how to use oil and acrylic on a painting, how to set up a palette, how much paint/oil to use, how to mix paint, how to layer the painting, how to erase, how to create sharp edges, how to blend, how to paint glass, what is glazing, how to naturally clean and care for acrylic and oil brushes, and more.
