Explore the world of glass fusing at the Center. Learn how about glass cutting, design, molding, and care. In both beginner and advanced classes, students complete fused glass projects using a variety of glass types and fusing techniques.

Description: Building on the intermediate skills you already have you will learn the process of screen printing, the proper way to mix EZ Enamels and the correct firing schedule to get the best results possible. Also incorporated into this 6-week class will be demonstrations on cutting a circle without using a circle cutter and how to bend stringers. Open studio time is also available.

Materials: Students are responsible for purchasing their own sheet glass, kiln shelf paper and fiber paper. Supplies are available for purchase from the instructor. Tools are available for use. Cost varies due to type, size and number of projects. Each student may create up to two items each week no larger than 12x12.

Important Update: Students are responsible for purchasing their own sheet glass and bringing to class. Some of the techniques you will learn involve using glass powdered frit. Due to the amount of powdered frit needed, students will be responsible for bringing their own to class. *SW Art Glass on Thomas Rd sells sheet glass, powdered frit and other glass fusing supplies. Tell them you are a student at Phoenix Center For the Arts. Ask about student discount. If there are specific colors/sizes of frit, noodles, or stringers that you would like to use for your projects, please understand that they may not be available in the classroom. Description: The Glass Ballot: Students will be given instruction on different techniques, but with a twist. In this class, students will be presented with two options for techniques they want to learn and vote. The technique with the most votes wins and will be taught the following week so that students have the week to plan. Possible techniques may include, but are not limited to, tie-dye, crackle, stencils, or kilncarving. Every other week is a student work day to practice techniques or work on any existing projects. The class is 7 weeks. That leaves gives time for three technique instructions days, four student work days.

Materials: Each student may create up to (2) items each week no larger than 12”x12. Kiln shelf paper will be available for purchase in the classroom. Tools are available for use. Description: Dress up your garden and house plants with glass charms and plant stakes. This class will focus on the kiln carving technique which allows you to create an embossed effect in glass, but additional ideas will be included.

Materials: Students will need to bring fuseable glass or purchase in class, a box to hold materials, and simple design ideas.

Prerequisite: Some basic glass cutting helpfull.

Materials: Students will receive three 6 inch squares of fusible glass, a 6 inch square of fiber board, and kiln shelf paper for firing. They will also have access to an assortment of scrap glass. Additional glass and supplies are available for purchase from the instructor. Tools are available for use. Cost varies due to type, size and number of projects. Each student may create up to (2) items each week no larger than 8”x 8.”

Description: Dive into the dazzling world of Basic Stained Glass, where you'll transform light and color into your own personal works of art across four creative sessions!

This hands-on workshop, taught by glass/mixed media artist, Sonja London-Hall, will guide you through all the fundamental techniques needed to bring beautiful glass projects to life. You'll master the satisfying skill of cutting glass, learn how to apply the essential copper foil method, and discover the secrets to clean assembly and smooth soldering. By the final session, you’ll be ready to display your shimmering masterpiece for all to admire.

Glass materials are sold by the teacher in advance, ensuring you have everything required to start creating from day one. Students should provide a standard set of stained glass tools (some are available at the center.)

Get ready to wrap and solder your way to a brand-new, light-catching hobby!

Tools Needed

Glass Cutter: A quality, oil-filled glass cutter with a carbide wheel is essential for scoring the glass precisely.

Running Pliers: These specialized pliers apply even pressure to a score line to ""run"" or break the glass cleanly.

Grozier Pliers: Handy for nibbling away small, unwanted pieces of glass along an edge and shaping intricate curves.

Safety Glasses: Eye protection is mandatory whenever cutting or handling glass to protect your eyes from chips and shards.

Permanent Marker: A fine-tip black marker (like a Sharpie) for tracing patterns onto the glass.

Small Sponge & Water Container: For keeping the tip of the soldering iron clean later in the course, but good to have handy.

Clear Practice and colored project Glass: Various small pieces of inexpensive, clear scrap glass will be provided to help you get comfortable with the cutting process before moving onto colored glass.

And this time, you can truly ""catch the wave"" with new instructor Sonja London-Hall, who will expertly guide you through the creative tide!

We will cover:
Mosaic design techniques specific to kiln-fired glass.
Safe glass cutting and shaping practices.
Understanding the basics of glass fusing and the magic that happens in the kiln.

Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned glass enthusiast, Sonja will help you ride the creative tide and leave with a breathtaking piece of nautical art ready to hang in a sunny window or display on a mantlepiece. This isn't your average quick craft session; you'll immerse yourself in traditional techniques, creating a balanced and beautiful panel that brings a sense of calm and focused energy to any space.

Over the day and a half, you will:

Refine the precise craft of cutting glass to fit a mindful, pattern.
Learn the historic skill of working with lead came, the traditional material used to assemble large panels.
Develop expert techniques for assembling, soldering, and cementing your panel for lasting strength and beauty.

Unplug from the modern world and connect with this meditative craft. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed your own elegant, hangable Zen panel, ready to diffuse light in your home or studio.

All necessary tools and materials will be available for purchase directly from your instructor, ensuring a seamless and peaceful experience from start to finish. Come find your center through the art of light and glass!"

Description: This serendipity class will have you designing 6 legged, fluttering and buzzing creatures that pollinate the plants and flowers. Your creations will be able to stand alone as mini sculptures, or can be used in other artworks or jewelry.

Materials: Students are responsible to purchase their sheet glass, dichroic glass if desired and kiln shelf paper. Supplies are available for purchase from the instructor. Tools are available for use. Cost varies due to type, size and number of projects.
