“IF I CAN’T BE DARING IN MY WORK OR THE WAY I LIVE MY LIFE,THEN I REALLY DON’T SEE THE POINT OF BEING ON THIS PLANET.” -MADONNACONTENT WARNING: THIS PIECE CONTAINS NUDITY

“The diverse array of works in the 2018 festival speak to the current political moment, express and physicalize emotion, investigate the self, celebrate community, and pass on cultural knowledge,” says Festival Coordinator, Allyson Yoder. “Audiences will experience a rich night of movement, music, and emotion as they bear witness to the many vital roles dance plays in our lives.”

The festival lineup represents a mix of mature, established choreographers from the Valley and up-and-coming, younger artists, including students and recent graduates of university and community college dance programs.

The new Beta Residency Program will also allow two choreographers, Felix Cruz and Samantha Lupascu, the opportunity to workshop their pieces over several months leading up to the performance. The residency provides structural and artistic support in the form of free rehearsal space, professional marketing and documentation, a work in progress showing and feedback session, and a guaranteed performance opportunity at the Beta Dance Festival, creating a safe container for risk and experimentation as artists develop their craft.

Unlike previous years, this year’s festival invited community members to participate in the jurying process by serving as panelists on Beta selection committees. Applicants to the festival were allowed to participate as panelists but did not score their own applications. Panelists included: Felix Cruz, Hira Ismail, Anya Hernandez, Jean McCurdy, Dinae Hunter, Ruby Morales, Michelle Marji, Michelle Ceballos Michot, and Julie Akerly.

“Being a panelist and resident at this year’s Beta Festival, it is clear to see the inclusivity, equity, passion, progression, and support the festival is offering for the dance community in Phoenix,” remarked Beta Resident, Felix Cruz.
