Hereafter Surfaces and Soft Projections engages archival photographs of the Sonoran Desert during Jim Crow, a moment in which Black Americans were still forming a sense of what it meant to exercise legal freedom and citizenship within the United States. What might it mean for such a process of self-fashioning to take place in close proximity to the border, and in explicit collaboration with the United States imperative dehumanization and dispossession of Native peoples.
