PAINTING & DRAWING

Students at every skill level enjoy painting and drawing classes at the Center. Whether it’s their first time, or they are a professional artist, students return each semester to keep perfecting their craft. The Center has multi-week classes and one or two day workshops, available in-person and online. Classes span a variety of techniques including oil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, and colored pencil.

The instructor will introduce the materials, talk about the basic color mixing, and the use of brushes, q-tips, palette knife, spray bottle, quantity of paint to use, and adding medium to paint. The following techniques will be addressed: drawing methods in achieving symmetry and perspective, starting a painting using a brown underpainting, how to use oil and acrylic on a painting, how to set up a palette, how much paint/oil to use, how to mix paint, how to layer the painting, how to erase, how to create sharp edges, how to blend, how to paint glass, what is glazing, how to properly clean and care for acrylic and oil brushes, and more.


Beginning students start with a still-life painting using old masters techniques of building layers.
 Returning students can complete unfinished work or start something new - Please get your own reference material or use free stock photos/public domain.
 Learning how to see and push paint around while in a creative environment is the most important thing on your artistic journey. Description: This 8 week class offers an exploration of techniques that sharpen observational skills while drawing from live nude models. We will be covering gestures (short poses), academic poses (long pose), and portraits. The following will be addressed: what tools to use and how to use them, how and where to start, how to properly sight and measure, how to check proportion, value (light and dark), and more. Allow yourself to be a beginner, there is a joy in the process itself. Drawing from life is like meditation, where a journey of discovery is the most enjoyable part. All abilities are welcome. Leave perfection at the door!
 
Materials: Most materials are provided: newsprint and basic drawing materials. Instructor will go over the materials on the first day. If you would like to get your own materials, these are recommended: Newsprint 18"x24” for gestures, Strathmore Drawing Paper 18"x24” for long poses. Compressed Charcoal, Pink Eraser, Blending Stump, Chamois, Charcoal Pencils, and Pencil Eraser. Students should expect to spend $50+ on their materials.

Description: This 8 week class is open to all levels and styles. The instructor will introduce the materials, talk about the basic color mixing, and the use of brushes, q-tips, palette knife, spray bottle, quantity of paint to use, and adding medium to paint. The following techniques will be addressed: drawing methods in achieving symmetry and perspective, starting a painting using a brown underpainting, how to use oil and acrylic on a painting, how to set up a palette, how much paint/oil to use, how to mix paint, how to layer the painting, how to erase, how to create sharp edges, how to blend, how to paint glass, what is glazing, how to properly clean and care for acrylic and oil brushes, and more.


Beginning students start with a still-life painting using old masters techniques of building layers.
 Returning students can complete unfinished work or start something new - Please get your own reference material or use free stock photos/public domain.
 Learning how to see and push paint around while in a creative environment is the most important thing on your artistic journey. Allow yourself to explore and experiment - there is not a specific way to paint a tree! Have an open mind about the joy of the process itself, and leave perfection at the door.

Materials: Most materials are provided. Students are responsible to bring one roll of Viva paper towels to class and a canvas 16x20”. Canvas is available for purchase from the instructor for $8 cash. Paint, tools, and supplies are available for use.

Description: If you ever wanted to learn how to paint with watercolors and never had the tools and techniques acquired, this class is tailored for you. The class is all about the very basics a beginner level student needs to start their journey with watercolors. No formal experience needed for the class while stage by stage demos, helping students to follow in a very slow and conductive pace are presented by a well experienced master artist instructor

  • Table easel
  • Any sketching/drawing pad, 12”x9” or 14”x11” or similar sizes
  • 6B graphite pencil
  • 1 watercolors pad Canson XL cold-press 140lb 11”x15” (blue cover)
  • 1 Arches 10""x14"" cold pressed 140lb not glued block 12 sheets
  • Board larger then 11”x14” to mount/tape the painting paper on easel
  • 1 watercolor of 12 or more paint tubes set
  • Basic recommended colors: yellow ocher, burnt umber, burnt sienna, deep or cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, deep or cadmium red or vermilion, Chinese white, ivory black, sap green, Payne’s gray
  • 1 HB pencil
  • Artist painter tape ¾ or 1” (unless using block pad) Blick’s has good artist tape
  • Sharpener (or utility knife)
  • Kneaded eraser and white rubber eraser
  • Wash cloth/towel (any old cloth will do)/ I have lots of it in class
  • Large size (about 10x13) watercolors palette (scrub well few times with soap if a new one)
  • 1 or 2 small/medium size water containers (any short medium size cup/jar. Not long ones)
  • Paintbrushes/ I use acrylic and watercolors brushes: (the more the better. Only watercolors/acrylic short handles brushes). I’ll have some extra brushes in class

Allow yourself to be a beginner, there is a joy in the process itself. Drawing from life is like meditation, where a journey of discovery is the most enjoyable part. All abilities are welcome. Leave perfection at the door!
 
Materials: Most materials are provided: newsprint and basic drawing materials. Instructor will go over the materials on the first day. If you would like to get your own materials, these are recommended: Newsprint 18"x24” for gestures, Strathmore Drawing Paper 18"x24” for long poses.
