Youth Arts Camp Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Youth Camp Programming at the Phoenix Center for the Arts.  As a volunteer, you have a chance to experience new art forms, earn art classes, and have an AWESOME spring, summer, or fall break!

We currently have the following volunteer positions available for Spring Break Camp 2017 and Summer Camp 2017.

  • Head Counselor/Youth Camp Management Intern
  • Camp Counselors
  • Classroom and Activities Assistants

All Camp Volunteers

All camp volunteers assist Camp Manager and instructors with day-to-day activities including but not limited to: art classes, lunchtime, before and after care, classroom prep, and performances.  No art experience necessary!

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Be on time and enthusiastic every day
  • Notify Camp Manager of any illness or absence as soon as possible
  • Motivate, encourage, and serve as role model for campers
  • Assist with ensuring the safety of campers at all times
  • Be attentive and follow all camp procedures and routines
  • Assist with planning and implementation of camp activities
  • Participate in all activities with groups in and out of classes

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to engage positively with children
  • Ability to commit to at least one full session of camp
  • Minimum age 13 years (requirements vary based on position)
  • Must provide fingerprint card (volunteers ages 16+)
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds as needed
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to participate in physically strenuous performing arts activities
  • Attend Camp Volunteer Training

Head Counselor or Youth Camp Management Intern

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement age-appropriate and engaging activities for campers
  • Oversee camp volunteers, delegating duties and responsibilities and breaks as needed
  • Assist with weekly camp newsletter
  • Help supervise before/aftercare and camper sign-in/out
  • Be attentive to, enforce, and provide feedback on camp procedures and routines
  • Recognize and appropriately address behavioral issues, responding to opportunities for group problem-solving

Required Qualifications:

  • Available for full camp sessions
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience leading activities groups of children
  • Interest in child development
  • Enthusiastic, energetic and engaging
  • Exhibits high level of responsibility, promptness, and initiative

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree related to education or child development
  • Demonstrated experience developing activities and leading large groups (30+) of children
  • Certified in Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

Camp Counselors

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead a group of up to 15 campers, promoting respectful interactions, participation, and fun!
  • Transition assigned group between classes and assist with classroom activities
  • Be respectful of each individual instructor’s classroom management style
  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving
  • Handle minor camper conflicts sensitively and effectively
  • Refer any continually disruptive, destructive, or unsafe behaviors to Camp Manager

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 16 years old
  • Available full days for one or more camp sessions
  • Experience leading groups of children
  • Enthusiastic and engaging personality

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in child development or education
  • Certified in Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

Classroom and Activities Assistants

 Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provides assistance and encouragement to campers in Visual Arts classes and participates with campers in Performing Arts classes
  • Assists instructor with class prep and activities
  • Refer any destructive, unsafe, or continually disruptive behaviors to instructor or Camp Manager

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 13 years old
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience or interest in assigned artistic area
